There have been strong links between the Munich and Frankfurt teams since early 1996. Both clubs were founded approximately half a year earlier and established contact with one another in April 1996. Since then the two teams have met between three and five times a year, alternating venues each time. In addition there have also been an increasing number of international fixtures each year, with the highlights such as the Oktoberfest Cup in 1997 and 1998, in which teams from England, Sweden and France took part. A combined German team made up of players from Frankfurt and Munich also competed in the annual Bundaberg Cup in London in April 1998 (finishing a respectable fourth from nine teams). The Redbacks have also competed against a Danish outfit from Aalborg on occasion.
At the end of 1998 representatives from Frankfurt and Munich created in the AFLG a basis for the further development of the game in Germany and decided on the establishment of a regulated competition.
AFLG - Foundation:
The AFLG was set up in 1999 as a German promotional body for Australian Football and its associated culture und way of life. AFLG was brought into existence by the Frankfurt Football Club e.V. (the Redbacks) and the Munich Football Club (the Kangaroos), both of which were founded in 1995. AFLG was set up to augment the predominantly regional activities of the Redbacks and Kangaroos and promote Australian Rules Football throughout Germany.
