Australian football is planning to conquer China, with the appointment of the first football ambassador to the country.
The AFL, Melbourne Football Club, Melbourne City Council and AusAID are backing the push to take Aussie Rules to the world's most populous nation.
Sports management graduate Tom Matessi, 23, will be posted to Tianjin, a city of 10 million, about 120km southeast of Beijing.
Among his tasks will be to help organise the Demons team visit to China in October or November, which will be tied to a TV marketing campaign introducing Melbourne to the Chinese.
The Demons fan said the potential for making inroads into a country of 1.3 billion was huge.
"In China at the moment people are intrigued by Western culture, including sports.
"I'm expecting it to be a big challenge and I know it's a strange place, but we've got nothing to lose," he said.
His mission will also involve introducing the Australian game to schools through fitness programs, establishing Auskick training sessions, creating teams of Chinese players and finding sporting fields big enough to play on.
The game would have to be modified to be played on smaller Chinese athletics and soccer fields and the tough physical aspects would need to be introduced carefully, Mr Matessi said.
AusAID is paying for the Australian Youth Ambassador through its grants program.
With Melbourne and Tianjin sister cities for 25 years, Mr Matessi will be based at the Melbourne Council's office there.
Melbourne's mayor John So said the council had been working on the project for several months, with the backing of the Tianjin Government.
