West Take Home the Cup
|
May 6 2005 - From the USAFL website
Dallas, Texas played host to the first ever televised Australian Football game in the United States on the weekend and the historical event was nothing short of spectacular. The stage was set late in 2004 when the Dallas Magpies Australian Football Club won the right to hold the event that would attract players from all over America for an East versus West All Star challenge. The All Sports Television Network captured all the exciting action, which will be seen by millions of people in the US and around the world.
Under partly cloudy skies, blustery winds and a building crowd, the curtain raiser featured the best American players in what was the first of the East versus West battles. As the siren sounded to start the game fans cheered and watched in awe as the footballers went head to head in what was a fierce contest. Even though this was the first time players from both sides were teamed together, there were some great passages of play that resulted in early goals. The East side capitalized on their forward advances and carried this on throughout the four quarters to run out comfortable winners. The East team had continued its dominance of conference football beating the West team by 34 points.
The anticipation grew as the main game approached. More than 400 fans of Aussie Rules, new and old, filled in the stands and reviewed the two All-Star line-ups. This was what they had all come out for and they would not be let down. The two teams entered the field and were welcomed with a thunderous roar from the crowd. After last minute preparations both teams stood in silence for the national anthems of Australia and the United States of America. This was a moment of reflection but also a time to envision what was about to take place. The siren sounded at the conclusion of the star spangled banner and again the crowd went up with a cheer.
Players were now in position for the start of the 2005 "All Star" East versus West game. What had begun as a slightly overcast morning had turned into a perfect day for football, clear blue skies and a slight cooling breeze. The game started at a fast pace and both teams tried to work each other out in what was a relatively even first term. There were some thrills and spills as players fought hard for possession and the chance to score a goal and at the half time break it was the West who were able to stretch out a narrow lead.
Early in the third quarter it looked as if the West side were going to run away with the game, as they began to flex the muscles around the center of the ground and kicked a couple of early goals. This was shaping up to be a memorable day not just because ASTN was capturing it all on film but the West looked like they were going to steal the cup away from the East for the first time in this new rivalry. Not to be outdone, the East team found some inspiration and mounted a comeback. Late into the third quarter they had bridged a 3-goal gap and even jumped ahead on the scoreboard by one point. No one could have asked for a better show down for the last quarter.
Motivational words from both coaches at the last break echoed around the ground as both teams became desperate to clinch victory. The last 25 minutes of the game didn't disappoint the large crowd and players from both teams never gave up. In the end it was a momentous occasion for the West All Stars as they ran out 21-point winners and took home the coveted All Star Cup. Awards ceremony followed with the presentation of the cup and individual player awards.
Later on in the evening at the event banquet, the squad to represent America in the International Cup later in 2005 was announced. Thirty-five American players were selected to train and possibly be selected to travel to Melbourne, Australia and play on the hallowed turf that is the home of Australian Football, the MCG.
In what was a weekend of history making sport in Dallas, Texas the real winner was Aussie Rules Football. The expected growth and development of this game is undeniable and with such talented, skillful and determined athletes success is all but guaranteed.
Final scores were:
All-Stars:
West 13.11 (89) def East 11.2 (68)
Best: Grant Campbell (Dallas), Dustin Jones (Florida)
All-American:
East 8.11 (59) def West 3.7 (25)
Best: Darin Vsetecka (Nashville), Seth Haesecke (Dallas)

Carroll's home away from home
|
Feb 16 2005
from the Essendon website
There is an international flavour at Windy Hill this month. Chris Carroll, 24, a member of the St Louis Blues in the USAFL has spent the last three weeks training with Essendon. And despite being a long way from his home state of Missouri, he might have to get used to Australia, having made quite an impression on the club.
Carroll, who has only played Australian Rules Football for a year and a half, has been sent to Essendon on a USAFL scholarship to experience three weeks of pre-season training with an AFL club. It is the fourth year of the exchange program.
"I was only meant to be here until last Saturday, it was supposed to be my last day, but Sheeds kind of came up to me and asked me why I was leaving, we had a practice match so I guess I did kind of well," Carroll said.
"Sheedy is great, the guys do impressions of him, they love him, its crazy. It’s like no one really knows where he is coming from but they know he is right."
"So now I am just going to continue training, I don’t really know what will happen, there has been some mention possibly of playing at Bendigo (Bombers), but I really don’t know. I had originally planned on coming for the 3 weeks and then going to play for a club, but now its up in the air." Carroll said.
Having spent time training with the Bombers, Carroll already has a great appreciation of the player’s abilities. "Its great to take a lead and be hit at the end of it, the deliveries are amazing, these guys are incredibly fit, their fitness is amazing and their skills are fantastic."
In his home competition Carroll plays centre-half forward and would like to play more on the ball when he returns home. "But here I play forward pocket or flank which is good because you get to watch people like Scott Lucas and learn a lot, like how they move."

USA prove to strong for Canada
|
Aug 2 2004
On the weekend of July 31-August 1, AFL Canada and their national team, "The Northwind", hosted the United States Australian Football league (USAFL) and their national team, "The Revolution", in a series of International matches featuring their "A" and "B" squads.
Matches were played up at the Ontario Australian Football Leagues (OAFL) field located at Humber College North in Toronto. With warm sunny days over the weekend it was a fantastic two days of Australian Football featuring the best 50 players from both countries.
On Saturday there were two games played that featured both countries "B" squads playing each other as the curtain raiser to the 49th Parallel Cup played out by both "A" squads for the North American bragging rights. Both games were played at a cracking pace and with teams showing amazing skill and team work. The USA came out on top in both matches
|
|
on the Saturday but not without getting a scare from two fast finishing Canadian teams that had superior fitness but gave their rivals too big a lead to run down. The 2004 version of the 49th Parallel Cup stays with our American counterparts for another year. We hope to get it back from them in 2005 when we meet them in Melbourne, Australia for the 2nd International Cup.
USA `b' 10.13.(73) d Canada `b' 6.6.(42)
USA `a' 9.9.(63) d Canada `a' 7.9.(51)
On Sunday it was the top squads of both countries the "A" playing their opposition "B" squads. This was to be an interesting one as the Canadian had found out that the USA had dropped some of their "A" players back into the "B" squad to strengthen it. The first match saw the Americans "A" squad easily account for the Canadian "B" squad. The 2nd Sunday game was between the Canadian "A" squad and the American "B/A" squad, with Americans looking to clean sweep the Canadians on home soil. This was not to be as the Canadians came home the strongest with superior fitness and running power to take the win from the "Yanks" and leave them with something to think about before seeing the Northwind next year.
USA `a' 12.17.(89) d Canada `b' 1.3.(9)
Canada `a' 7.11.(53) d USA `b' 3.8.(26)

East defeat West in All-Star Game
|
May 14 2004
The East triumphed again in the 2nd Annual East v West Championship held in Atlanta on Saturday, but there are a few stories to tell about the game just the same, and who knows probably a few about less than game related activities!!!! Arriving at the field all players were greeted to the wide and lush expanses of the Atlanta Polo & Country Club fields in Cumming, Georgia the location of the 2004 USAFL National Championships. A full size field of 180 x 140 yards had been laid out by the host club to showcase the great skills and fitness this game demands. And were these two attributes ever so needed on this day. Bring on the heat and it shall be done, Atlanta turned on one of the hottest days since last summer and only for a slight intermittent breeze the humid conditions could have been categorized as a health hazard.
The curtain raiser game was revamped slightly from the proposed All American format to include nominated All Star players from Atlanta, Milwaukee and North Carolina playing for the West due to insufficient players from making the trip from the west. This made for a very evenly balanced affair with never an easy ball to be found. Just great tough footy.
The East took an early ascendancy and seemed to be teaming well together. The West had opportunities but couldn't put goals on the board a fact that was to later be telling in the game result perhaps. At quarter time East led 3.1 to the West 0.3.
The second term saw the West knuckle down and get back into the game, some great passages of play allowed them to be almost on level terms at the main break with East leading slightly 4.3 to 3.7. The game could have been all over in the third term but the West couldn't get the ball through the big sticks. Kicking 1.7 for the quarter it allowed the East to take a slender lead of 5 points into the last change. West tried hard in the last term but the East had all the answers, both teams kicking 3 goals a piece the East held sway after a spirited effort by the West team.
Final Scores
East 9.11.65 defeated West 7.17.59
Then it was the All Stars turn. 44 of the best players in the USA going around this great field made this the fastest, toughest and most highly skilled local game of Aussie Rules ever played in the States. The West came out firing that's for sure and slammed on goal after goal from the first bounce. First to the ball and capitalizing on every single mistake the East made they had 4 goals on the board before the East blinked.
The benches were running hot with interchanges, a move that ever increased as the heated conditions took there toll though the game. At quarter time the scores were an ominous sign perhaps that the East were in for a titanic struggle this year following their win in 2003. The East got their first late in the term but West had added another to make it 5.1 to 1.3 at the first break.
The second term with the East kicking with aid of a slight breeze they slowly began whittling away at the West's lead. The West was dominating the mid field though and if only for some great defensive work by the East the game could have been all over at half time. The lead at the main break being 15 pts all players resigned to the shade for some well earned refreshments supplied by the Atlanta Kookaburras. West leading 7.2 to 4.5.
The third term was survival of the fittest and after the West ascendancy in the center started to subside it seemed to come down to a battle of the defenses. The ball moving quickly from end to end. The crowd was treated a great display of high marking, plenty of bone crunching tackles and fantastic skills. However it was the conversion ability of the West that meant they added two goals to their tally whilst the East lamented missed chances.
At the final change back the margin was out to 29pts points. West 9.6 to East 4.7, perhaps an insurmountable lead given the game as it had been played thus far and of course the conditions. But funny things happen in football and this was true here. West came out shoring up defenses maybe too much and gave back the East a chance to get back into the game. Now dominating the center themselves the East were able to string together several goals.
Into the dying minutes of the game the East hit the front for the first time for the day. Not long after the siren blew and one could think the game was stolen but scores will read for ever and a day the East by 4 points regardless of how they got that way. Five unanswered goals in the last term to the East's where they had struggled all day to get any system happening up forward due to the great defenses of the West meant disappointment for the West team where they had been the better team maybe most of the day.
Final Scores
East 9.11.65 defeated West 9.7.61
What was amazing and very true and there were numerous mentions of this after the events that it was impossible to tell who were Australians and who were Americans out there. This shows the standard and the development of footy in the US is at. The day nearly ended with a great function at the Marriot Hotel where with the few obligatory thanks, awards were presented to the 110 attending guests.
Milwaukee's star recruit Luke Woolrich from Hampton Rovers in Melbourne was a stand out in the revised curtain raiser and received the MVP award for his great game. The Scott Nicholas Medal for Best on Ground in the USAFL All Star game went to the East's and Boston's Brad Rinklin for a superb never say die game at full back.
Alan Nugent announced new inclusions into the Revolution Squad to for the imminent game against the Northwind in July and the trip to Australia for the International Cup in 2005. The night winded down with a trip out on the town with hosts Atlanta making sure all players got to see some of the nightlife of Atlanta.
All in all an event that exceeded all expectations and only goes to prove that footy in the USA is going ahead in leaps and bounds.

USA prepare to tackle Canada
|
May 19 2004
The U.S. player's response to the East/West game has been outstanding and the Revolution coaching staff is looking forward to seeing all the players perform on June 12. Nominations have been received by over 100 players which is fantastic for the game in the U.S.A. For the players, just like last year there will be some that none of the coaching staff are currently aware of, so regardless of what game you play in or what position you are assigned, play as hard as you can and earn a spot on the teams for the 2004 International games. Performance in these games against Canada will be vitally important for anyone who wishes to be part of the squad to tour Australia next year in the International Cup.
The Atlantic Alliance Cup was unfortunately reorganized after all European teams decided not to attend. The USA Revolution squad will be divided into 2 teams to play 4 games over 1 weekend in Toronto July 31 and August 1. Besides the USA Revolution team, a Development squad will also be selected with the plan to select younger players (preferably U23) who in future will hopefully progress to the USA Revolution team. This will be the largest number of USA players ever to travel and play together. On the Saturday the USA Development squad will play the Canada Northwind and the USA Revolution will play the Canadian Development squad. On Sunday both Development squads will play each other and the final game will be the 6th International between the USA Revolution and the Canada Northwind. The winner not only will win the 49th Parallel Cup but also the Atlantic Alliance Cup. Besides the obvious benefit of the Revolution playing together, this is a fantastic opportunity for all USA players to represent their country, experience games at a higher level, develop friendships with players from all over the country and give themselves multiple opportunities to impress the coaching staff for selection in the 35 man squad to Australia in August 2005.
