April 16 2003
The New Zealand AFL Under 16 Junior Falcons team have returned back home "undefeated as Champions" of the Pacific Tri-Nations Canberra Tournament beating two ACT sides and a Nauruan side. They have created history by becoming the first ever NZ AFL team in almost 100 years to win an AFL tournament. The majority of these Kiwi AFL junior footballers have come from the NZAFL's Under 17's competitions which were run for the first time last season in Auckland and Wellington.

Other players have come from the NZAFL's Junior Development Schools Program. Their performance in this Tournament was exceptional, especially considering how new the majority of the players are to the game of AFL. With the calibre of talent being displayed in this tournament, it gives NZAFL great confidence for the future development of AFL football in New Zealand.
